Only a few kilometers north of town and east of road 90, one can find Eilat's two major "wetlands". Eilat sewage reservoir is a big brackish water pond, heavily populated with fish and surrounded by lush reed beds.
This is one of the only reliable places for waterfowl, herons and other fish-eating species, mainly during Autumn, Winter and Spring.
The northern bank of the reservoir is the traditional drinking spot of the coveted Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse (only at dusk). Roughly,
1 km north along the old Arava rd., the Flamingo pools (K20) consisting of five big, shallow salt ponds are part of the salt factory,
which is located south of the IBRCE. Aside from the hundreds of Greater Flamingos, these ponds host a huge variety of waders, waterfowl, gulls,
and migratory passerines, and are an important breeding ground for Kentish Plover.
Key species- Sewage plant:
Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse, Osprey, White Pelican, Ferruginous Duck, Purple Swamp-hen, Pallas's Gull, Bonelli's Eagle, Greater-spotted Eagle, Imperial Eagle,
Barbary Falcon, Wigeon, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Citrine Wagtail, wintering ducks and cormorants.
Key species- Flamingo ponds:
Greater Flamingo, Glossy Ibis, Marsh Sandpiper, Terek Sandpiper (rare), Greater Sandplover, Broad-billed and Curlew Sandpiper, Kentish Plover,
Collared Pratincole, large gull species, Gull-billed Tern.
Important facts and logistics:
Both locations are privately owned and managed, but can be freely accessed by medium quality dirt roads, suitable for all vehicles.
If you decide to look for the drinking sandgrouses, keep a safe distance (50 meters at least) and keep quiet until all birds leave and take off.
Driving between the salt ponds is possible, but pay attention to the track conditions- during morning hours and rainy days, the mud is extremely
slippery and driving can be dangerous! Keep off the central dikes-these are important roosting areas for migrants and serve as breeding grounds.
Please note that both sites are functioning industrial infrastructures- make sure not to harm or alternate any of the facilities. Both sites are off limits
in the evening due to proximity to the Jordanian border!
